Medical Marijuana Certification Q&A

Why is medical marijuana certification necessary?

In Pennsylvania, medical marijuana certification is necessary because the marijuana plant (Cannabis Sativa) is illegal at the state and federal levels. Therefore, to use marijuana for medical purposes as a Pennsylvania resident, you need government approval.

Since 2019, Dr. Park has helped patients navigate the application process and receive medical marijuana certification.

Who qualifies for medical marijuana certification in Pennsylvania?

To receive medical marijuana certification in Pennsylvania, you need to be diagnosed with a qualifying medical condition. These conditions include:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Autism
  • Cancer
  • Chronic pain
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Neuropathy
  • Dyskinetic and spastic movement disorders
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • Hepatitis C
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn’s disease)
  • Intractable seizures
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Terminal illness

You might also qualify for medical marijuana certification if you have a mental health disorder, like anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

What does medical marijuana certification involve?

To qualify for medical marijuana certification, you need to have been diagnosed with one of the previously mentioned conditions. We will need proof or your qualifying condition at the time of your appointment. You will also need to register on the state medical marijuana registry. We can assist in registering you as well as helping to retrieve records that confirm your qualifying condition.

When you are registered and we have documentation of your condition, you will be scheduled for a telephone appointment  with the doctor who will review your history and medications and complete your certification during your 20 minute visit, given there are no contraindications. Payment for the visit must be received prior to or at the time of your visit. There is a payment to the state as well, which in certain instances, is waived.

Your medical marijuana card can be used to purchase marijuana flower and other marijuana products at medically licensed marijuana dispensaries throughout the state.

How often do I need to renew my Pennsylvania medical marijuana certification?

Once you receive medical marijuana certification from the state of Pennsylvania, your medical marijuana card is good for a full calendar year. To ensure your certification remains in good standing, all you need to do is visit Dr. Park once a year for your annual patient certification. We offer non-certification visits to discuss your use of cannabis as well as your other health issues, outside of certification. We also are available throughout the year via email or phone to answer any quick questions that you may have concerning the use of medical cannabis.
